What is groupage?

We mentioned groupage in one of our first posts, but we had not yet gone into detail with this system. Before we go on to describe the best way to do it, we have decided to dedicate this post to the concept of groupage itself in order to familiarize ourselves with it.
Definition:
Groupage is a method used in the importation of merchandise. When the quantity of such merchandise is insufficient to fill an entire container, it must be grouped with that of other importers in order to fill it.
What is groupage?
When we start importing from China, it is very likely that we will have to resort to groupage.
Occasionally we will see that some companies refer to groupage with the word “consolidated”, using both interchangeably. In any case, we will always call it by the same name to avoid confusion.
Most commonly, the groupage service is provided by a specialized company, freight forwarder or other professional intermediary. The price is stipulated according to the volume (in cubic meters) and weight of the goods.
Proportionally it is much more expensive than shipping a full container, but it is the best option if our goods occupy less than half of one of these containers. Groupage is especially interesting when the merchandise occupies little volume but has a high cost, as for example in the import of consumer electronics (tablets, smartphones…).
