It is common knowledge that China has a one-child policy that makes it difficult (though not impossible) for Chinese families to have more than one offspring. As discussed in this article things could be starting to change and it is expected to be definitively abolished in 2015.
Although there are many reasons in my opinion, the Chinese government wants to prevent the population pyramid from inverting in the long run, producing terrible consequences in a nation that is not yet able to sustain a social security system with pensions and public health for all its inhabitants.
However, it is not only a social issue. This political change could become one of the greatest opportunities for the consumer market of all time. Something much bigger than the American Baby Boom of the 1940s.
Currently, 18 million children are born in China every year. This is already a consumer market in itself and many Western brands have taken advantage of it. In this case, the uncertainty about food quality in China has only helped to ensure that the majority of products dedicated to babies and children are imported.
In the face of such a political change, it would not be unreasonable to expect an increase of 50 to 100% in this market practically from one year to the next. Those who are positioned in this market will enjoy a truly golden era, but there will also be room for many new players.
What do you think? Do you think we will experience a real Baby Boom in China?
