Nowadays, finding suppliers on Alibaba is not very difficult. Everyone can come in and search until they find the product they want. Then, with a little English, ask for quotations and they will be sent to you as soon as possible.
What’s the problem?
It turns out that the tricky thing in finding reliable suppliers on Alibaba. This does not mean that we will be ripped off and the company will disappear tomorrow, but that a number of unexpected and difficult to control things can happen to us:
– The supplier claims to be a manufacturer but is only a trader. This is especially important if we are looking for large quantities of the same product or even to manufacture our own brand (it does not make sense to look for a manufacturer for a few units, for that a trader is better).
– The trader who attends us does not know his products well. Although the prices are competitive, there is no way for you to correctly answer the questions we ask you.
– Sold out of stock. Many suppliers have hundreds of products in their catalog but when it comes down to it, almost none of them are available. In the best case they will take a week to serve us, in the worst case we will have to expressly ask them to produce for us (which is only possible for large quantities).
– Errors in merchandise. Despite the supplier’s good will, they get confused when sending us things because the salesperson is not the same one who prepares the packages and there is no good communication between them.
– They lack quality control. If we buy small quantities, we will be more likely to receive consignments that have turned out to be defective and have to be removed. This is because we do not have the capacity to protest nor do we represent a big business for them.
How to avoid it?
We need to hire a company to contact suppliers by phone and in Chinese, visit factories, perform quality controls and negotiate samples at low cost.
