Sometimes, when importing goods from China, we are exposed to the product arriving damaged at destination. This situation usually happens when an inspection was not carried out or when the packaging or transport were inadequate. Below we summarize how to claim damages and what to do to avoid getting to this point.
How to claim damages
- Photograph the damaged goods upon arrival, before unloading.
- Record the issue on the delivery note and with the carrier.
- Notify the insurance company within the deadlines set in the policy.
- Contact the supplier with detailed evidence and request a refund, replacement or discount.
- If there is no agreement, evaluate mediation, arbitration or legal action according to what was signed in the contract.
How to prevent damages
- Approve a pre-production sample with the proper packaging.
- Perform a pre-shipment inspection that includes packing verification.
- Supervise the container loading (Container Loading Check).
- Take out cargo insurance with adequate coverage.
- Choose Incoterms that distribute risk in a balanced way (CIF, CIP).
