If you have decided to do business with China but have no prior experience with the Asian country, you probably have many questions, and one of the most common is: how long does an import really take? Below we summarize the typical timeframes for each stage.
1. Sourcing and negotiation
Finding suppliers, requesting quotes and negotiating conditions usually takes between 2 and 6 weeks, depending on the complexity of the product and how many candidates you compare.
2. Samples and approval
Producing and shipping samples may take 2 to 4 additional weeks. Plan well so that the approval of the sample does not delay the start of production.
3. Production
Production lead times generally range from 30 to 60 days for orders that do not require special tooling. Customized products, tooling or new molds can extend the lead time to 75–90 days.
4. Inspection and shipment
A pre-shipment inspection requires 3 to 5 business days after production is complete. After approval, the goods are loaded into the container in 7 to 10 days.
5. International transport
- Sea: 25–40 days.
- Air: 5–10 days.
- Rail (Europe): 18–22 days.
6. Customs clearance and inland transport
Customs clearance takes 1 to 5 business days under normal conditions. Inland transport adds 1 to 5 additional days.
In summary, a complete import operation from China usually takes between 3 and 5 months. At MingTa Group we manage every stage to optimize lead times and avoid surprises. Contact us to plan your next operation.
