Are you about to take the step of importing from China? You probably have many questions about how to reduce risk and find reliable suppliers. In this article we share the keys that have helped our clients identify the right partners.
1. Define exactly what you want to import
Before searching, prepare a clear technical sheet with materials, dimensions, finish, packaging, certifications and target price. The more precise the brief, the better the offers you will receive.
2. Use several sources at the same time
- B2B platforms (Alibaba, Made-in-China, Global Sources).
- Trade fairs in China (Canton Fair, electronics fairs in Shenzhen, etc.).
- Sectoral exhibitions in Europe and America with Chinese manufacturers.
- Local sourcing agents with presence in the manufacturing region.
3. Verify each candidate
Request business license, export license, certifications, references and, if possible, organize a video call to see the factory. Suppliers that refuse this basic verification should be discarded.
4. Order samples
Samples confirm whether the supplier can produce what you need. They are also a filter against fraudulent intermediaries.
5. Negotiate with several suppliers
Compare quotes, lead times, payment terms and Incoterms. Having two or three viable options gives you negotiating power.
6. Visit the factory or send a representative
For meaningful purchases, an in-person visit, by you or by a local representative, is the safest way to confirm that the supplier is real.
