Incoterms 2010: FAS (Free Alongside Ship)

Today’s post is dedicated to explain the FAS (Free Alonside Ship) Incoterm. In this case, the seller’s responsibility and costs end when the goods are delivered at the quay, alongside the ship, and from that moment on, it is the buyer who is responsible for any damage to the goods and bears the costs.

This term is used only and exclusively for transport by ship, either by sea or inland waterways and is advisable for bulk cargoes and bulky cargoes as they can be deposited in specific docks for this type of cargoes.

As in the previous Incoterm explained, the FCA (Free Carrier), in the FAS it is also the seller who has the obligation to carry out the export customs formalities.

To finish this post, let’s specify what each of the participants in an international sale and purchase, buyer and seller, will do with an example; let’s imagine that we buy a product from China and the term used in this operation is the FAS. The seller in China will prepare the goods and take care of the inland transportation in China until the goods are left on the quay alongside the ship, from there the buyer will take care of the loading on the ship, the international transportation and the inland transportation in the country of destination to his premises. Each one will carry out the customs formalities that correspond to it as exporter and importer.

We hope you found it helpful.
