As in the CFR Incoterm, in the CPT (Carried paid to) the transfer of responsibility for the goods does not coincide with the transfer of the payment obligations. They differ in that the CFR is exclusively for maritime transport and the CPT is for any means of transport.
The seller is responsible for the goods until they are placed at the disposal of the carrier, at which time the buyer becomes responsible for the risk of damage or loss until arrival at destination. However, it is the seller who pays the transportation costs to the agreed destination and also takes care of the export customs formalities.
If we were to make a purchase from a Chinese seller, we would have to take out insurance for the main transport from China to the final destination in Spain to ensure that we cover the possible risks of damage or loss of the goods. We would also carry out the import customs formalities. The seller would be responsible for the aforementioned, all expenses incurred including international transport, excluding insurance.
